I am sorry to tell you about the recent death of Mrs Betty Powrie on 14th March. Betty passed away in hospital after a short illness. She was 99 years old and had been a member of Liberton since a young age. Betty was Lady Captain in the mid 80s and was an active member of Liberton on and off the golf course. Three times she was victorious in the Ladies Matchplay Foursomes in 1972 with Elizabeth Currie, 1988 with Christine Banks and 1992 with Mary Henderson. Betty also presented The Powrie Trophy for Junior Girls with notable recipients being Stephanie Sutherland and Amanda Edwards. Inspite of having problems with her eyesight she remained in touch with Liberton and was in good form at Evelyn Hogg’s Lady Captains Lunch last year. Her son, John is in Brighton and we have passed on our condolences from the Club, unfortunately, due to the current restrictions there have been no announcements or funeral arrangements. She will be sadly missed especially in our Centenary Year.
